URGENT: Protect Your Pet’s Access to Safe Cannabis Medicine in California

From Dr. Tim Shu of VetCBD

Dear friend,

I’m reaching out today about an urgent issue that will significantly impact the future of veterinary cannabis use in California.

The California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) has proposed regulations that would limit pet-specific cannabis products to just 1 mg of THC per package—a restriction so severe it would make these products ineffective for many pets.

This rule contradicts both science and the intent of Assembly Bill 1885, which was passed to give veterinarians and pet owners safe access to cannabis therapies formulated specifically for animals. Limiting THC to 1 mg per package:

  • Prevents the use of full-spectrum cannabis, forcing manufacturers to use CBD isolate only—something already widely and cheaply available through the hemp market.
  • Pushes pet owners to use unregulated or human cannabis products, increasing the risk of accidental overdose or exposure to toxic ingredients.
  • Ignores best veterinary practices, which are based on safe CBD:THC ratios (such as 10:1), not a flat THC limit.

💥 The good news: There’s still time to act.

We’re in an open public comment period until June 23, 2025, and your voice can make a differenceI’ve linked a letter you can send to the DCC urging them to revise the proposed rules to focus on CBD:THC ratios instead of arbitrary THC caps.

👉 Please submit your comment ASAP to help protect safe, effective cannabis options for pets:

Let’s make sure California’s regulations support—not hinder—our ability to care for the animals we love.

Warmly,

Dr. Tim Shu
